Donald Trump Jr. has released a chain of emails on Twitter between an entertainment publicist and himself setting up a meeting with a Russian attorney who claimed to have information that would ‘incriminate’ Hillary Clinton and her dealings with Russia.
The 39-year-old son of President Trump released four pages of emails along with a statement on his Twitter account Tuesday morning. It wasn’t clear whether this was the entirety of the emails between the two parties.
In the statement on Twitter, Trump Jr. says he is releasing the email thread “in order to be totally transparent” about the 2016 meeting.
In the email thread, dated June 3, 2016, Rob Goldstone, an entertainment publicist, says “The Crown prosecutor of Russia met with his father Aras this morning and in their meeting offered to provide the Trump campaign with some official documents and information that would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia to be useful to your father.”
“This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump – helped along by Aras and Emin,” the email exchange continued.
Trump Jr., replied in the chain, saying “Thanks Rob I appreciate that. I am on the road at the moment, but perhaps I just speak to Emin first,” and suggested a phone call instead of a personal meeting.
Emin is Goldstone’s client, who Donald Trump Jr. said he knows through the Miss Universe pageant. Emin is an Azerbaijani singer-songwriter and businessman. Aras Agalarov is Emin’s father and a Azerbaijani-Russian businessman and property developer.
In another email dated June 7, 2016, Goldstone refers to a meeting with “The Russian government attorney who is flying over from Moscow.”
The story that Trump Jr. was offered potential information from the Russian government to aide his father’s campaign was first reported by The New York Times and came after months of staunch denials from President Trump that his campaign had connections to Russia.
In an interview that aired Tuesday on NBC’s “Today,” Natalia Veselnitskaya, the Russian lawyer who met with Donald Trump Jr., as well as President Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and then campaign manager Paul Manafort, said she received a phone call from a man she didn’t know and was told to meet with Trump Jr. She said she didn’t have information on the Clinton campaign and has never worked for the Russian government.
“All I knew was that Donald Trump Jr. was willing to meet with me,” she said through a translator.
The circumstances surrounding the meeting, and a report by The New York Times late Monday that Trump Jr. was told ahead of time that the Russian government was the source of damaging information on Clinton, have fueled new questions about the Trump campaign’s possible ties to Moscow.
President Trump has said that he was not aware of the meeting and did not attend. Later in the evening, Donald…
